Day 1 at YoReCa!

Day 1

1. arrived

2. sat with our schools

3. registered

4. opening speech by the director of MICA

5. discussed aims and objectives of camp : how we should be moreaware of the terror threats in Singapore and around the world and how we should be resilient in facing these threats.

6. finally got to mingle with other school. made friends. ice breakers by Cherilyn. designing of our very own special flag! woooooo~

7. lunch. was very very wonderful (?)

8. left for Alexandra SCDF. we sat through out afew lectures talking about emergency procedures, peacetime emergencies, unconventional terror threats(both global and national). then we went to a chamber in which we had to practice our In-Place Protection (IPP) knowledge,by experiencing a first hand account of all the essential steps of IPP procedures

9. the fieldtrip was extremely insightful, especially in emphasizing the need to be forever ready to face these ever-present terror threats in Singapore. We have to come to understad in greater detail the ubiguity of such threats around the world, and the fear and tension that we may experience when we are actually caught in these situation.

10. very often, especially in Singapore, we take our safety for granted. many of us forsake the need to be prepares to save ourselves or even others. the fieldtrip opened our eyes to see the terror and devastation that could result from these threats, and allowed us to personally feel these strong pangs of fear and unease as we attempted to save ourselves in the IPP drill.

11.when we returned to NACLI, we had our first challenge - the key punch. there were two pools of bombs on the floor, with paper plates being bombs. we were informed that we had to deactivate the bombs by hitting them with a (toy) hammer, that makes this weird quak quak sound, in sequence. what we did not know was that the numbers were in 5 different languages - english, numerals, chinese, malay and pictures etc...

12. in challenge we had one 'hitter' person, who was the only authorized member of our teams who could hit the plates in the pool. through the challenge, we learned that we should never (ever) panic in the face of a terror threat. althought this challenge was only a simulation, we realizd that we have to work together as a team throught the whole obstacle. especially regarding the wide variety of languages and extremely infuriating smiley faces, we had to corroborate and help on another to spot the elusive paper plates. this is very relevant to our lives, particularly in the fact that we cannot face a terror threat on our own, and instead calmly address the problem together.

13. the evening was extremely fun as well. our group managed to bond during the sharing session, we gained more knowledge about terrorism in singapore and the psychological impacts of the media on children and youth in particular. all in all, day one of our camp was enriching and enlightening, and we found that the main purpose behind all of this is to HAVE FUN!

THE END! THANK YOU
